La particolarità del film è quella di avere una coppia di scienziati impegnati in alcuni studi di massima segretezza e delle formiche impazzite come antagoniste. Già ai tempi di THEM! una vera perla del genere b-movies a tema fantascientifico degli anni '50, la cinematografia americana aveva trovato nelle formiche un nemico degno della propria forza militare, una sfida alla propria tecnologia. Vi è però una differenza enorme fra THEM! e PHASE IV: nel primo film una colonia di formiche è stata contaminata dalle radiazioni in seguito alla prima esplosione atomica avvenuta ad Alamogordo, le formiche diventano dei giganteschi mostri aggressivi che si infilano nelle fogne di San Francisco.. o forse era Los Angeles, dovrei rivederlo; nella seconda opera invece le formiche rimangono nelle dimensioni innocue che conosciamo ma in seguito all'allineamento di più pianeti si organizzano e dichiarano guerra a due scienziati, i due studiosi protagonisti dell'opera. Gli insetti si ribellano, si difendono, comunicano fra loro, costruiscono dei rifugi inespugnabili e affrontano le varie famiglie dell'Arizona, costringendole a lasciare i loro domicili.
