This year is undoubtedly a good one for RPatz fans: Soon we're getting Pattinson with an absurd wig and accent as The Dauphin in Netflix's The King, and as a mustached madman in Robert Eggers's The Lighthouse. That's a healthy dose of Pattinson being hella weird and having a blast while doing it. But while you wait for both of those films ( The Lighthouse heads to theaters on October 18 and The King comes to Netflix November 1), you can watch High Life on Amazon, which is free for all Prime subscribers. For those who missed it, High Life is a 2018 science-fiction horror film from French director Claire Denis, who best known for 1999's Beau Travail. High Life is Denis's first English-language film. Pattinson stars as a criminal named Monte who is, in lieu of the death sentence, sent on a dangerous space mission to extract energy from a black hole.

Epperò la storia esemplare e un poco disturbante è racchiusa tra cartelli che, all'inizio e alla fine del film, ci parlano di schiavitù moderna e dell'orrore della tratta. L'apologo, in questo modo, risulta orientato verso la più bieca esemplificazione e si porta dietro la condanna (ovviamente necessaria e giusta) di chi applica il commercio umano. Lo spettatore può, così, guardarsi le scene sadomaso in una posizione per così dire protetta dal moralismo che tutto guida. Il regista ci mostra l'abominio, ma lo fa per insegnarci qualcosa. Noi spettatori lo guardiamo perché sappiamo che quell'orrore non ci riguarda e che non cercheremmo cuccioli di uomo nemmeno se la nostra figlioletta di sei anni avesse bisogno di un cuore nuovo. Così non ci rendiamo conto che vedendo questo film diventiamo condiscendenti. Spento il lettore dvd non possiamo più dire di non sapere che certe cose succedono per davvero. Eppure ce ne torniamo alla nostra vita come niente fosse. E diventa difficile capire se è più immorale questo nostro atteggiamento o il film che, con le sue scelte estetiche, ci permette di assumerlo senza troppi dolori.
