For this one, I was still going into the office, people were still going to their jobs as normal, and schools were still in person. Because of this, YT streaming is pretty limited for most people to morning (before work/school) and evening (after work/school), with maybe some exceptions for people who regularly work from home, break times, or people with less strict office policies. YT also requires interaction after some time, which means you can't just leave a playlist going and rack up views all day while you're gone from home. Music streaming on Spotify/Apple/etc. on the other hand is more feasible as it's more likely your school/work will let you listen to music while you work/outside of class hours. So, in this situation, YT views tend to be lower or slower coming in while music streaming platforms might be meeting goals/seeing good numbers. If there's an album as well (as is usually the case), the split time between MV and album streaming can also account for lower YT views. Working from home didn't actually change much in terms of my timetable, I worked the same hours as I would have in the office with the exception of having more time after work due to no activities and no commute.

WARNING ULTRA LONG POST. PSA: I'm not going to get into the goods/bads of streaming and streaming culture, I know how reddit feels about it and I have my own opinions. This post is just focusing on the logistics/process side of it - not on song or album enjoyment/vibe/reception or on streaming culture as a concept. There's been a lot of discussion about streaming goals/why goals aren't met, so I thought I'd share my experience and observations with streaming to reach goals as I think they are not dissimilar from how a lot of people approach this. This is possibly more aligned with US patterns as that's where I live. In general, I focus on YT in the first 24 hrs (as this is a 24 hr goal), and then Spotify afterwards, as songs migrate into my master playlist and get put on rotation, and long term charting goals become more important. This was also a weird year for streaming, given quarantine, change to online school, and economic/financial consequences of the pandemic. Time: I was fortunate enough to be able to transition to working from home at the end of March - the only comeback I participated in prior to this was for BTS On.

So I'd say there was somewhat more time for YT streaming, as I could do it after work and while I wasn't in meetings. On the other hand, my music streaming (in the first 24 hrs) decreased as I had more time for YT, so I focused on that. After that period, I transitioned to Spotify as per usual. Despite those who were able to transition to WFH ostensibly being able to stream more, I think the overall increase in streaming numbers this year can largely be attributed to "quarantine fans" and students. For summer releases, as is typical, school is out of session, but this year, there's a global pandemic, so students are by and large home with free time. Likewise, "quarantine fans" missed the winter 2020 releases but are tuning in just in time for the summer ones - this is most obviously reflected in Dynamites views. The increase in fans across the board seemingly fill the streams gap left by those who were no longer able to stream/engage with kpop due to the pandemic. Aside from these, the typical rules apply - lower YT streams if accompanied by an album, high streams for singles.

Without my tablet, I was little more limited as, for obvious reasons I can't use my work computer to stream, I needed to use my phone for meetings relatively frequently, and I use my personal laptop as a second screen so it was close to my work laptop requiring me to pause YT when I was on a call. I found I could use YT on my TV which made it a little easier for me to stream as background noise, as I could set the volume low, and it generally wouldn't be overheard during a call. This brings me up to a whopping 4-5 devices from which streaming is possible, of which I could use 1-2. I would say I have a higher number of devices than most people - in general, continuous streaming of one type only requires one device that doesn't need other functionality. Obviously, not everyone has one device free with that level of consistency, so logistically, streaming passively can be difficult. The majority of people are not going to sit in front of the same playlist for 24 hours without interruption, so, view counts can depend significantly on device availability.

The return to school reflected a similar pattern as is usual, i. e. less time for students, but online schooling left similar "extra" free time as those working from home have resulting in higher streams throughout the day. In general, time is more influential for YT views than music streaming platform streams. YT requires some level of usage permission which can influence the time of day/season that streaming is possible, Spotify/Apple Music don't really. Devices: This is the one people don't really talk about much, and I didn't even really think about until I was working from home. If you have a laptop/phone/tablet that you don't need for the majority of the day, you could use it exclusively for streaming and put it in another room/area so it doesn't bother you, and rack up a ton of views with minimal engagement. Same can be done with Spotify/Apple Music. I got a tablet about a month before the release of Be (a purchase unrelated to streaming lol), and was able to use it for YT in the first 24 hrs and then Spotify afterward without much effort on my part or interruptions to my work.

It can be harder to use music streaming platforms due to the financial cost associated, if your workplace doesn't allow it, or, again, if you have limited devices and need to make a choice of which way to stream (though I think in this case people tend to choose to listen to the music over streaming the MV). Congrats/thanks if you got through this entire post. I'd love to hear more thoughts and observations on this aspect of streaming.

I don't really see trends here - I'd say young professionals might have more devices or maybe students at home might be able to use a family member's computer/tablet. In general, I'd say device availability contributes to passive stream counts - this is purely goal attaining, not with a focus on watching the MV or listening to the music. I'd say most people who stream will do this after a few listens/watches, while actively streaming in another way, i. listening to the album while letting YT run or vice versa, or playing the CD, or by letting a playlist go with headphones in while you're sleeping. Overall, I'd say YT streaming is easy if you don't expect to be out a lot, and have multiple devices, one of which can essentially be only used for streaming for the day. If you don't, it's harder to do continuously. On the other hand, music streaming can be easier if you're out a lot (i. listening during a commute, running errands, etc. ), if your workplace allows it, and because less interaction with the service is required.
