The best example of this is the ridiculous way that Dennis ends his killing spree, by showing up in front of Henry and telling him that he wants to testify. Delivered in that kind of deadpan style, the line is in stark contrast to the darkness of what Dennis has just done, and seems to be a suggestion that he's not fully aware of its severity. I want to testify. There's a spark of life in moments like that that proves that Castle Rock has a beating heart underneath its insistence on withholding key bits of information from its audiences. I had never heard of this movie until my oldest was in her last year of pre K 4, her class teacher had the movie and their class just loved it. All the kids chanted for it everyday around this time of year. Now my 3 year old chants for it! It's about an outcast, a square pumpkin of coarse, but there are other good lessons and many warm hearted moments too! Really it's a perfect Halloween movie for children without being too scary and leaving the darker side of this fun holiday! My oldest cried her heart out when she couldn't find a square pumpkin at our local "patch" just like Spookley that year... Who would've thought the movie could've made such a impression.
