Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2020 Verified Purchase Why is this in the western reading format when the other deluxe editions like Berserk and Hellsing, which are amazing, aren't? That's my big gripe with this, especially considering the price tag. I've always loved BOTI but my former roommate had been collecting them so I never felt the need to collect them myself. Now that I live on my own I was excited to see a new hardcover edition. I always prefer hardcover to paperback, always, so I'm sad that this wasn't given the proper love it deserves. Oh well. BOTI is still an amazing manga regardless and I'll continue to collect the other volumes as they're released. They just won't feel nearly as special as Berserk (buy it now seriously) and Hellsing do. Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2020 Verified Purchase Well, let's get into it: Pros: - Great cover, simple, and has an amazing texture to it, it's outrageously soft and smooth.

Imagine reading something like JoJo and Dio, or any other villain, shows up and "ゴゴゴ" is replaced with "Menacing" looping across the page, it'd be super weird. On this release, you'll see stuff like "thwap" and "whoosh" and it's kind of weird, while, again, their other releases don't do this, it's literally as if they just had their ancient scans, they cleaned them up, and compiled them instead of just doing this amazing series justice for once in it's printed life. But again, this is just a personal nitpick. What's most infuriating, is that this isn't the first time this manga has been released in the west, again if it was 1999, and I had no idea how manga would be read, or how they're supposed to look like, this wouldn't be a problem. But it isn't the 90's anymore. This series was originally released on paperback, then on omnibuses, and now this. Most of the original printings have been out of print for years now and this is supposed to be the best version to purchase. If Dark Horse had the manga scans, they could have made sure they read properly like any collector would want, and it's disappointing because their other releases do such a great job at providing an amazing compilation of volumes to fans, yet they didn't with this, it's a huge letdown.

That sums up my entire experience with the game. The story is forgettable and shallow. An ancient evil comes back, kills your master, and you find out that you have to save the world. The problem with the game being so focused on story is that the text is poorly translated, so any sense of emotion the game tries to invoke is crushed when you read it. Unfortunately, Immortal Blade is just another boring MMORPG. There is almost no gameplay, character progression isn't very interesting, and the game presentation itself just feels cheap.

Yes the story is great, but it is a disservice to the fans and author to keep the old format. This might be ok for a more casual fan who doesnt care about maintaining the original reading style. Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2020 Verified Purchase Dark Horse did a great job selecting this series and bringing it to the American public. They initially released the series in single issues like a typical comic book and it worked because that's how i got into it. So im not losing any sleep over it not reading like a typical manga. If you like Vagabond, Berserk, Vinland Saga, or Golden Kamuy this is right up your alley! Top reviews from other countries 5. 0 out of 5 stars Happy costumer! Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 24, 2020 Verified Purchase Great quality! Just like the Hellsing and Berserk deluxe series that I also have in my collection minus the Western reading from left to right. Arrived brand new! No issues. 3. 0 out of 5 stars A editora deixou a desejar... Reviewed in Brazil on November 7, 2020 Verified Purchase Hoje chegou a deluxe edition de Blade, da Dark Horse.

The trades are out of print and some books can be expensive. Some of the omnibus are also OOP. The new book is hardcover and slightly oversized compared to previous issues, which is awesome but there is a glaring problem that has stuck with this series since the 90s. Back when manga was getting popular in the west, most publishers were flipping the images so books could be read left to right [japanese manga reads right to ledt] that way new readers wouldnt be confused. This was pretty understandable in the 90s. Manga hadn't really got a foot hold in the US so some edits were passable in order to bring in new fans. Most manga stopped being flipped over 20 years ago. So with each new release still showing a flipped presentation shows dark horse is stuck in the 90s. This hardcover would have been a perfect time to present the story for the first time in its proper reading orientation. Which would make it actually worth double dipping for. I would not recommend this to hardcore manga fans.

Is it still worth it? Yeah, if you don't mind the odd reading style (unless you're accustomed to it), which might be a bit hard for more modern manga fans to get used to right away. I just hope they fix this for the future releases instead of using an old archive (at least, I assume that's what they did), and have the cover be on the correct side. For the pages to read as they should and for the SFX to be as it should be, just iconic and part of the background. Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2020 Verified Purchase It came in October 27! I'm so happy with my such a beautiful hardcover and the illustrations are amazing. This book is so beautiful ahhh! I love it! :) Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2020 We are now on our fourth release of this fantastic manga. Originally as a floppy comic in the 90s, then collected in trade paper backs, then those were collected in 3 in 1 omnibus', and now finally this new hardcover release. So pick your poison, cuz they all have problems.

- The cover art, while a bit small, very nice quality (other Deluxe Editions by DH usually have an icon for the series, Berserk having the brand, Hellsing a cross, so I assume they wanted to use a Manji but avoided it to prevent any miscommunication, still, one of Manjis blades would have been cool). - Pages are stellar and beautiful, not blurry or anything, greatly done. Con(s): - It's formatted like a western book - It has western SFX To elaborate on this, the front cover is the left cover of the book, not the right one like all manga (with a few exceptions for western manga before a certain time period), and it reads left to right, not right to left. This wouldn't be a problem if this was 1999, but it's not. Even when looking at the other deluxe editions done by Dark Horse (Hellsing and Berserk), they're formatted properly, and read right to left (Berserk even came out before BotI and reads normally). The sound effects are also westernized. This might seem more like a nitpick, but again, normally, at least nowadays, you'd have a sound effect on the image, then a translator's note below it telling you what it means.
