Un humor zafio y de escaso gusto es lo que parece poseer Leone en esos instantes, mejorando un poco en ese aspecto cuando entra en escena John (Coburn) y debido a un carácter totalmente opuesto al de Juan. La presencia de James Coburn —que participó en la película por recomendación de Heny Fonda — mejor bastante el film, que durante sus primeros veinte minutos soportan la histriónica composición de Rod Steiger, a quien Leone tuvo que soportarle muchos caprichos sin ser capaz de controlarle en sus tics interpretativos, bien visibles en el film. Coburn realiza una hierática composición, llena de matices y profundidad, en las antípodas de lo que Steiger ofrece y su personaje es más atractivo y agradecido. La relación de ambos personajes está bien desarrollada, a pesar de cierta elipsis abruptas, y los actores demuestran cierto entendimiento aunque Steiger resulte a ratos insoportable. Al lado de ellos destaca el secundario Romolo Valli dando vida a un doctor simpatizante de la revolución y que termina traicionando a sus compatriotras debido a que es torturado.
