I believe there are few movies of this type that are epic and stay close to the way it was without over glamorizing a horrible time in the history of the world. This movie made me cry, swell with pride for my fellow Americans, and hurt deeply for the thousand who died. I've bought a few movies for my daughter to watch and I intend to buy this one for her. I think anyone who has never served needs to see what those who did sacrificed. I don't intend anything more than to inform those who have never experienced the fear, dread or absolute panic of war and the courage it takes to overcome these feeling and do what need to be done. This movie shows that exactly. Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2018 Verified Purchase Just an aweful movie. Poor acting, no emotion at all, couldn't care less about any character at all. But what bothered me the most was everything looked liked it just came off the assembly line from the manufacture. All the crew hats looked liked they had brand new leather visors, all of the vests and face masks looked like they were right out of the box.

(The unfortunate victim is survived by a cute granddaughter who makes her way into the mountain fortress. ) For the most part, however, "The Fortress" is a soporific grind that drearily alternates between scenes depicting screaming arguments among the king's advisers (anger-fueled episodes that usually end with toadying lackeys reciting rote compliments like "Your majesty's grace is immeasurable! ") and other scenes showing how miserable soldiers and civilians alike can be as they withstand dead-of-winter conditions without adequate clothing and food. "The Fortress" clocks in at 139 minutes, but feels much, much longer.

But minister of rites Kim Sang-heon (Kim Yoon-seok) takes a far more bellicose stance. " Every so often, though not nearly often enough, writer-director Hwang Dong-Hyuk (working from a novel by Kim Hoon) livens up "The Fortress" with graphically violent and impressively well-choreographed battle scenes.

Even in Australia, some things never change when it comes to obvious ploys. Throughout, Miss Ward has the good sense to look as if she would rather be back in the mini-series ''The Thorn Birds. ''

And even Miss Ward, a former model and still beautifully angular, is not terribly convincing as a grade-school teacher clucking over her young wards in the Outback. Directed by Arch Nicholson, ''Fortress'' gives the impression that it isn't quite sure of its bearings. Perhaps this is intentional as a device to keep the audience off balance, but it succeeds only in being irritating. There is a clue of the violence to come in the opening scene in which Tommy, played by a young actor with the distinctive name of Sean Garlick, shoots a fox and casually brings it home for family display. But the main action gets under way at the schoolhouse when Sally Jones (Miss Ward) has her lazy lessons interrupted by four thugs with ornate masks pulled over their heads. By contrast, viewers only have to worry about being seriously brain-fogged, if not bored to death, as the often confusing narrative sluggishly progresses. Top-billed South Korean superstar Lee Byung-hun (familiar to North American audiences for his appearances in the "Magnificent Seven" remake and the "G. I. Joe" film franchise) underplays to a fault as Choi Myung-gil, the taciturn minister of the interior who dearly wishes to avoid a war he fears King Ingo (Park Hae-il) is ill-prepared to wage.
