Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2017 Verified Purchase Aged couple living in a country visits Tokyo to see how their sons and daughters are getting along there. However, they are too busy to welcome their father and mother. A bit disappointed after spending several days there, the old man and wife return home and she dies of stroke…. Slow, but moving. The film well deserves your patience because you will find yourself in the same situaion as they are with their mother passing away, and simultaneously, you will have to share their father's solitude, sadness of bereavement and difficulties of human relationships that anyone is destined to face sooner or later in their lives. This is Director Ozu's masterpiece leading you to see what you really are, what the family means to you, through which you would recognize the impossibilities of love. In 2012, Sight and Sound, the British Film Institute-issued magazine, ranked "Tokyo Story" all-time best film.

Even the father in a scene in a bar with old friends seems to question if he did his best as a father or if he could have done better. This "simple" story has so many complexities if one bothers to dig deeper at each subsequent viewing and like any truly classic movie should it invites the viewer to reflect long after the film's end and to even relate to their own experiences with their own parents. I for one will certainly be watching this bluray many more times to dig into more of what it truly offers. This is not the Transformers movies so those expecting Kenny G instead of John Coltrane will be disappointed. Those demanding a lot more from films will enjoy repeated viewings of this worthy film classic that should be welcomed into any film buff's video library. Very highly recommended. He gives us a tour of the old Ofuna studios and talks about his collaborations with Ozu that nearly lasted a lifetime. Audio commentary with David Desser, editor of Ozu's 'Tokyo Story'. Illustrated booklet featuring an essay by critic David Bordwell titled "Compassionate Detachment" Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2017 Verified Purchase This is a classic film by writer-director Yasujirō Ozu and is in the Transcendental style of filmmaking (along with Robert Bresson and Carl Dreyer; see Paul Schrader's book "Transcendental Style in Film"). It masterfully illustrates family dynamics in a Japanese family in post-war Japan where the values of the previous generation--a veneration of ancestors, respect for aging parents, etc. --is upheld by an elderly couple's daughter-in-law, the widow of their son who died in the war, and not by their own children. The narrative is layered by the father's reckoning of his past failures and by his apparently self-sacrificing wife; it is her spirit and that of the daughter-in-law that balances the malice of the children.

Although never explicitly stated the wonderful script and acting implies the children each had varying experiences growing up with their parents and some such as the oldest sister appears to still bear resentment against her father for his wild younger drinking days for example. The filial daughter-in-law never had to experience the younger days and hence appears to be better able to accept the elderly couple in their older more mellow days. The beauty of this story and the way Ozu tells it is that despite its "simple" plotline the actual complexity of one's feelings towards one's parents being able to forgive past slights and to establish relationships that alter over the years is so expertly brought to the surface here that one feels sympathy with all the characters. Even at the most superficial level while it is easy to identify the selfishness and callousness of the behaviour of the children one cannot help but to wonder if issues only hinted at may be at least partially responsible for these future actions.
