Aulus is here to finish the job Julius Caesar, that wimp, started almost a hundred years ago. He's going to invade Britannia once and for all. He's doing it for Rome! (And to scratch some unspecified personal itch about which we're being kept in the dark for now). We meet Aulus toying with four would-be mutineers who are strung-up and awaiting sentence. "What's the matter, you don't fancy it? " he asks them with a glint in his eye. "What was it eh? The weather? " By the time the accused start mumbling about giant squid and sea serpents, we're firmly in Monty Python territory. Britannia is funny from the off, and only gets funnier. Less funny is the Roman slaughter of a tribe of Celts on Solstice. Unarmed and high as several kites, the Celts didn't stand a chance. They were too busy doing campfire Zumba and dyeing things with woad to fight back, so the Romans moved through them like a hot knife through butter that's just done a load of hot knives. The attack leaves poor motherless Cait (Eleanor Worthington-Cox, definitely one to watch) also big-sisterless and granddadless.

There's a lot of characters and situations to take in in the opening episode (you won't be remembering any names for a while) and that's what you want from a pilot for this kind of show - all the pieces gleaming on the chessboard - but none of the elements are likely to grab you particularly (except for the oddly prevalent use of hallucinogenic drugs, which is welcome visual fun). Production and CGI-wise, Britannia can't, obviously, live up to the Game of Thrones standard now expected - a drone camera wobble here, an oddly lit battlefield tent there - and the show doesn't quite have that sheen that makes you believe a warrior is there in that field and in that period, sometimes falling into that trap of looking as though it's a cosplayer lost somewhere off the M3. This is completely forgivable given the relatively diminutive budget, but the same does not excuse the script, which is a bit disappointing from Jez Butterworth ( Spectre, Black Mass, Edge of Tomorrow), full of questions being answered with anecdotes, allegories and metaphors - a Game of Thrones staple - but executed in a less compelling fashion.

With some wise but stern words, Aulus recommends that Antonius take a dump so that the locals know he arrived and as a way to unburden himself. While off answering the call of nature, Antonius is kidnapped by the Druids. In the forest, Lindon overcomes his Regni captor and escapes, almost being discovered by a marching Roman army. He returns to the Cantii citadel and tells King Pellenor and his court what he has seen. Amena tries to ingratiate herself with Kerra, but only succeeds in annoying her and implying that they both seek the death of her father. At the Roman camp, Lucius reports to Aulus about the disposition of his landing forces. Antonius' disappearance has been noticed, but the army begins to move inland with slaves including Cait's father, Sawyer. Cait and Divis cross the country. Divis tells Cait of the Romans, and that they are the servants of the demon Lokka. After Divis reveals that he had been to the underworld, Cait wants him to take her there so she can say goodbye to Islene and her grandfather.

Antonius acknowledges his mistake and is prepared to face his punishment. Aulus offers the second chance. Antonius kills his fellow deserters, and the entire army puts to sea, heading for Britannia. At the Cantii settlement of Locerly Cross, Cait and other girls prepare to go through the naming ceremony on the eve of the Solstice which will mark their passage to womanhood, and the taking of a new name. Although forbidden to speak in the run-up to the ritual, Cait accidentally blurts out "stop" while playing with her sister, Islene, who has already undergone the naming ceremony. Islene assures Cait that she won't disappear because she spoke, unlike what she has been taught. The two have a conversation about their deceased mother and still-living father, and what it is like to be a woman. The Outcast Druid, Divis, demands an audience with Veran. For weeks and months, Divis has been having visions and is convinced that the sun will not rise the day after the Solstice. Veran seemingly ignores him, while Willa tells Divis that if he ever returns, she will eat his eyes.
When they express fear at crossing the sea to a land ruled by demons who feast on human flesh, Aulus darts back a prissy: "That sounds scary. " Be sure he has the biggest balls of any Roman and he means to bring our rainy little lump of rock under Claudius's rule even if it is overrun with "fucking giant squid". Pardoned deserter Antonius (Aaron Pierre) stabs the other three to death to prove his worth and joins the Roman fleet as they sale west. A quick look at the lyrics does offer some explanation. Histories of ages past Unenlightened shadows cast Down through all eternity The crying of humanity The first two lines could definitely be applied to the British Isles when the Romans land. The Celts are superstitious, divided and afraid, but the Druids are seen here as a deeply sinister bunch, all bulging eyes and bony-fingered curse-bestowing.

And yet … the sight of Zoë Wanamaker (as Queen Antedia) charging towards a battle in a chariot is always a welcome one and she kicks off her part in things nicely with a resolute, "I shit on the soles of your dead, " before laying waste to half of Kerra's unsuspecting tribe. I will forgive this series everything if we get to see the Queen and the rival upstart princess facing off in the future. Or perhaps even joining forces against the invaders. But you can tell by the twitch of his mouth that he is deeply uncomfortable with all the mystic symbolism among the foliage. When Antonius returns to camp having been abducted by Veran's minions, he is spouting someone else's warning. The Romans must sacrifice a stag to the Druid gods or face the consequences. Aulus' response is pretty final. He writes it on papyrus, seals it, stuffs it in Antonius's mouth and has him buried alive.
