The screenplay was by Dalton Trumbo, from a book by Capt. Ted Lawson. Just after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Jimmy Doolittle (pioneering aviator and the developer of instrument flying) proposed a daring top-secret raid on the Japanese mainland, using B-25 bombers launched from an aircraft carrier. Director Mervyn LeRoy takes us to the Pacific Theater of World War II with this adaptation of the 1943 serialized book by Captain Ted W. Lawson, who was a pilot on the actual "Doolittle Raid" on the Japanese capital on April 18, 1942. Spencer Tracy plays Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle, the man who planned and led the raid, while Van Johnson is Lawson with Phyllis Thaxter as his pregnant wife Ellen. The top-secret mission begins at Eglin Field, Florida with Doolittle gathering the airmen of the Army Air Corps and putting the fear of God in them: "You're going to do things with a B-25 you thought were impossible.
